Setting strategy is more than pointing in a new direction

With spring upon us, here are some of my thoughts on setting and implementing corporate strategy -

Imperative that those in corporate leadership functions, who's job it is to set corporate strategy, understand that there is more to setting strategy that just pointing a finger in a set direction.

Successful strategy demands:

  • Clearly communicated goals and objectives
  • A leadership team that is committed to achieving the goals
  • Properly allocated resources for the duration
  • No deviation in goals and objectives. No side-tours.
  • A committed implementation team who has the power to implement
  • One driver who can mobilize resources as needed
  • Set clear and achievable, yet aggressive goals
  • Set timeline and measurable milestones
  • Assign clear responsibility
  • Have a set of urgency: Commit to strategy, implement, move on to next set of goals and objectives
Failure: moving on to next thing without completing previous.

What are your thoughts?
